Portrait of a Marriage by Vita Sackville-West and her son Nigel Nicholson
Vita Sackville-West's garden at Sissinghurst is responsible for planting the first seed of "England yearning" in my heart, all because of this book I read when I was twenty-four. Part of the book was written by Nigel Nicholson, the son of aristocratic parents, Vita and Sir Harold Nicholson. This dark fairytale of a true-life princess who broke all the rules alternates chapters taken from Vita's diaries and letters with chapters written by her son who helped tell the intriguing story of his parents' unconventional relationship and marriage. It's a visit to another world, upper crust 1920's and 30's literary England, very interesting to look at from afar. But the thing that resonated with me was the garden and the legacy Vita and Harold left for generations to come. The garden in Sussex England is open to the public and is beyond wonderful.
